Thomas Medardo Oliva is one of the most recognized and awarded attorneys to run for Civil Judge in Queens in years. A practicing lawyer for over 30 years, Tom’s peers have consistently recognized him for his integrity, legal skills, and service to the residents of New York City and State. He has been named a NY Super Lawyer every year since 2014 – an honor given to only five percent of lawyers in the state – has won the "Latin Impact" award in 2021 and sits on the Board of Editors for the prestigious NY Law Journal.

Tom grew up in Flushing, Queens under the love and guidance of his Cuban and Puerto Rican parents. He and his wife of forty years, Paula, raised their family in Queens too, and they currently enjoy life together in Little Neck. He has spent his life working with and for the people of Queens County. His first jobs were in Flushing, working at a local pizzeria and corner luncheonette, and helping his dad in the building where he was a super. As a high school student in Astoria, he started his ownpainting company. Today, he is President of the Latino Lawyers Association of Queens County, which he has been a member of for over a decade.

From the start of his legal career, Tom has been committed to creating diverse courtrooms. As a student at Hofstra School of Law in 1988, Tom was one of nine Latinos in the entire law school. He co-founded the school's first chapter of the Latino/aLaw Student Association, which is still serving students at Hofstra today. He is a past board member of the Puerto Rican Bar Association as well as a past member of the Hispanic National Bar Association and the Long Island Chapter of the HNBA. Tom knows how important it is to identify with the people helping you navigate the legal system and has consistently prioritized making the courts more representative of the county’s population.

As a former prosecutor from the Bronx District Attorney's office, Tom worked to protect the most vulnerable members of society, including women and children who were subject to domestic abuse and violent crimes. As a civil judge, he will continue to protect the people of Queens County, ensuring that the citizens of Queens have access to fair and efficient justice, regardless of their background or circumstances. A Queens kid through and through, Tom has consistently prioritized his community and looks forward to the opportunity to continue to do so as a Queens Civil Court Judge.
